Matt Yglesias’s comments section has been a fratboy shithole for years, and all that time I’ve been suggesting that he monitor them. Apparently he finally listened to me, so I won’t need to be commenting there any more. Unfogged, Crooked Timber, Yglesias, The Valve…. only DeLong remains.

But… But… But I do monitor my comments section?
Or are you suggesting that I don’t monitor them enough? Or that the problem isn’t with the commenters?
🙂

I will never understand you, Brad?

The comments section at Crooked Timber is moderated. It could be done more vigorously, of course, but you should be careful what you wish for.

Every blogger gets the comment section she deserves.

Well, this is a highly elite comment section.

This is a test. Can I get a way with the word ‘socialist’ here?

Yes, but if you have an erection lasting more than four hours, you’ll be asked to leave.

The Medium Lobster never comments in my comments section… sob…

So Marcel, if you still have an erection, get out of here and go see your physician.

MY’s had crap comments for a long time. What did he do? Did he start deleting people?
December 20, 2009 at 5:00 am
John, that’s quite a list of places where you no longer feel obliged to comment. I think I’ll start a new blog, just so I can ban you from my comments section.

It’s funny. When I spent six month calling Yglesias a “trustfund scumbag”, there was no problem.
But when I spent 24 hours noting that the Podestas are registered lobbyists for Cigna and HealthSouth, wham-o, moderation enabled.

It’s weird. I don’t know specifically what I did but it happened immediately after he threw me his first link ever, the comments to which were about as imbecile as I’ve ever seen there, which is saying something.
Perhaps the CAP concluded that you and I are a smoothly-coordinated tag team, based on the fact that I agree with you now and then.
If I’m not mistaken, the most recent Al unit hasn’t been banned.

I’d venture that I’m about 90% sure it was the Podesta lobbying issue that triggered the bannings. That made miserable optics for them during a healthcare firestorm.
And there were many more than just you and I banned.
Just as I’d done my research ahead of time and knew that the Podestas make several million dollars a year from the pharmaceutical companies and about half a million dollars a year from the health insurers, and so was able to start bringing this up right after the WH told the Senate to cave, I’m sure CAP has been keeping a list of IP addresses to ban in the event they had to sell a crappy deal like this to the left.
It’s not as if this moment came as a surprise to either side.
“If I’m not mistaken, the most recent Al unit hasn’t been banned.”
He’s not a problem to them. It’s lefty cranks with some degree of knowledge who complicate their mission. Righty cranks don’t pose a problem for them in getting their message out to a lefty audience.
Only lefty cranks would have a problem with the Podesta conflict of interest here, for example.
And for the sake of the historical record, Al has always played in the basketball threads at Yglesias’s place, and from what he’s said there over the years, I can venture with pretty much 100% certitude that the “real Al” has been the same one guy the whole time.

I was a bit surprised because I never have felt antagonistic to Matt. It’s his commenters who piss me off. They’re so stereotypically what they are.
Didn’t know that about the Podesta connections. I haven’t tried to post at Think Progress for a long time.
December 21, 2009 at 8:46 am
Woah. Wait, you guys were banned? I’ve tried to submit some comments over there and they haven’t gone through, but I assumed that it was a website fuck-up.
And yeah, John – the comments on the post to your article were pathetic. A bunch of dick-swinging Asperger’s sufferers arguing about buoyancy. I mean, what the fuck?
January 2, 2010 at 10:53 pm
John, you were _banned_ from Yglesias’ site? Why?
January 3, 2010 at 12:07 am
I seem to have been reinstated. Petey was banned, though, at least I haven’t seen him there. But over the period of a couple of days, three of my comments failed to show even though others were able to comment.
I’m not sure that Sausagely did the banning himself. It may have been his slavemasters.
